A research member of SusTunTech, Igor Granado, defended his doctoral thesis entitled “Solving Fishing Routing Problems with Metaheuristics” in December 2023. The defence took place at the Faculty of Computer Science of the UPV/EHU, and the thesis was supervised by Josean Fernandes (AZTI) and Leticia Hernando (UPV/EHU). The thesis was developed with the support of the SusTunTech project, focusing on improving fishing strategy and operations by formulating novel, realistic fishing routing problems and implementing optimization algorithms to solve them. This will make it possible for fishermen to engage in a more sustainable activity by reducing effort, cost and environmental impact, thus ensuring their sustainability and efficiency.

The thesis received a unanimous grade of Outstanding, with honors (Cum Laude). Congratulations, Igor!
